Innovation in Disaster Risk Assessment

Welcome to the Understanding Risk Community Site

The UR community site was created prior to the Understanding Risk: Innovation in Disaster Risk Assessment conference that was held at the World Bank in June, 2010. The site was built as a platform for experts and practitioners in disaster risk management to exchange ideas and showcase innovation in disaster risk assessment.

Leading up to the conference, Session Leads started discussion groups around their session topics, posing questions to the UR community and allowing members to engage in an online dialogue. These discussion threads shaped much of the content of the live sessions at the conference in June.

By joining the UR community site, members can contribute their knowledge to the various discussion threads and have access to material from the conference that showcases best practice in disaster risk assessment from around the globe.

Become a member of a group, or browse through the video recordings of the opening and closing keynote speeches and the sessions themselves. You can also read the blog posts covering the event or review panelist power point presentations. The forthcoming UR publication on the conference proceedings will also be available on-line.

We invite you to join this global risk network and thank you for supporting the UR community.

What is risk? Can we measure it? If we understand it, can we manage it better?

These are the fundamental questions the Understanding Risk community seeks to address and discuss in this online community forum.

This forum is designed to bring together a diverse community of experts and practitioners to engage in an online discussion on various topics concerning innovation in disaster risk assessment.

The discussion threads generated in this online forum determined the content of 16 sessions that took place at the Understanding Risk Conference on June 1-4, 2010 at The World Bank in Washington D.C.
